Known for his narrow relationship with football, Pope Francis, who died on Monday at the age of 88, was remembered by clubs and sports associations around the world in social networks in which they regretted the pontiff’s departure.

One of them was Argentina’s San Lorenzo, of which the Pope was a frequent fan since his childhood and with which he had a strong relationship even after religious life.

“It has never been one more and has always been one of ours. I crow as a boy and man. Crow as a priest and cardinal. Crow also as a Pope,” the club wrote, in reference to the nickname with which fans are known.

“From Jorge Mario Bergoglio to Francisco, there was something that has never changed: his love for Cyclone,” said the club.

The president of FIFA (International Football Federation), Gianni Infantino, said he was “deeply saddened” with the death of Pope Francis.

“I had the privilege of spending a few moments with him on several occasions, and he always demonstrated his enthusiasm for football, emphasizing the fundamental role that our sport plays in society, particularly in the education and protection of children around the world,” wrote Infantino.

“‘Football is the most beautiful sport in the world.’ These were his words,” added the leader.

In Brazil, the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) lamented the passage of the Pontiff in a note accompanied by a photo of the president of the entity, Ednaldo Rodrigues, with the Holy Father.

“CBF President Ednaldo Rodrigues deeply regrets the death of the pontiff and decrees mourning one week, and a minute of silence in all matches organized by the entity. Francico liked football,” said the CBF.

“Rest in peace, Papa Francisco. Sport Club Corinthians Paulista pays tribute to the Pope of the People,” wrote the São Jorge Park Club.

In Italy, a series of Serie A clubs (first Italian Division) has publications on their social networks lamenting the Pope’s death.

Serie A organizers opted for the suspension of round games that would be held on Monday.

“His faith, his humility, his courage and dedication have touched the hearts of millions of people, making him a moral reference of our time. His legacy of peace and solidarity will remain an indelible example,” he wrote to Rome.

“As a light, your words will live in our hearts and guide us all eternity,” said the Milan.

“It was a spiritual and moral reference that always spoke to the heart of the world, with simplicity, humanity and strength,” said former goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, world champion with the Italian team in 2006.

“Throughout his pontificate, marked by the size of his great legacy, Pope Francis represented a huge spirit of solidarity and support for the most disadvantaged and vulnerable people,” Real Madrid said.
