O He left a will before he died on Monday (21) at the age of 88. In his final desire, he asked his remains to be placed in the papal basilica of Santa Maria Maior and that the grave is simple and without special decoration. It was indicated that the only inscription you should have is: Franciscus. “I have always trusted my life and priestly and episcopal ministry to the mother of our Lord, Mary Most Holy. So I ask my remains to rest, waiting for the day of resurrection, in the papal basilica of Santa Maria Maior,” says part of the will. This is the first time in over a century a pontiff will be buried outside the Vatican. Before him, Leo XIII, in 1903, asked to be buried in the Church of St. John of Latron.

“I ask that my tomb be prepared in the niche of the side corridor between the Pauline Chapel (Chapel of Salus Populi Romani) and the Sforza Chapel of this same papal basilica, as indicated in the Annex,” adds the Pontiff. “The tomb should be on the floor; simple, without special decoration and with a single inscription: Franciscus,” he continues. Francisco died on Monday at home due to a stroke that caused heart failure. There is no date for the funeral yet, but should be released in the next few hours. Francisco, the first Latin American Pope, died on Monday at 2:35 am (Brasília time) he was recovering from double pneumonia, which left him 37 days at the hospital between February and March this year.

“Papa Francisco

Mercy and choosing

In the name of the Holy Trinity. Amen.

Feeling that the sunset of my earthly and living hope in eternal life is approaching, I want to express my will will only with regard to the place of my grave.

I have always trusted my life and priestly and episcopal ministry to the mother of our Lord, Mary Most Holy. Therefore, I ask my remains to rest, waiting for the day of the resurrection in the papal basilica of Santa Maria Maior.

I wish my last earthly trip to conclude precisely in this very antique Marian Sanctuary, where I drove to pray at the beginning and end of each apostolic trip, to confidently give my intentions to the Immaculate Mother and to thank him for the docile and maternal care.

I ask my tomb to be prepared on the niche of the side corridor between the Pauline Chapel (Chapel of Salus Populi Romani) and the Sforza Chapel of this same papal basilica, as indicated in the Annex.

The tomb should be on the floor; Simple, without special decoration and with a single inscription: Franciscus.

Expenses for the preparation of my grave will be covered by the sum of the benefactor I provided, to be transferred to the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maior and to which I gave appropriate instructions to the Archbishop Rolling Makrickas, the Extraordinary Commissioner of the Basilica Cabid.

May the Lord give the deserved reward to those who wanted me well and will continue to pray for me. The suffering that was present in the last part of my life I offer you to the Lord for peace in the world and the fraternity among the peoples.
