Australian meteorological agency had issued an alert for dangerous waves throughout the east coast
SAO PAULO, SP (Folhapress)-At least six people drowned in Australia after large waves hit Sydney and other cities on the east coast of the country since Friday (18). Two people are missing.
Five of the fatal victims were in the state of Nova Wales do Sul, and the sixth victim in the state of Victoria, according to authorities.
According to data from the Queensland State Government, waves of up to 7.5 meters were recorded in the Brisbane region, located in the northeast of the coast of Oceania. The waves would have formed due to a low atmospheric pressure zone.
The Australian weather agency had issued a warning to dangerous waves throughout the east coast and stated that conditions could be unfit for surfing, swimming, fishing and walks. The warning of dangerous waves was suspended on Sunday (20).
On Sunday morning, however, a man who was fishing in Wattamolla, about 32 km south of Sydney, died after being dragged to the sea, New Wales from Southern police said he became the fifth victim in that state. A 14 -year -old who accompanied him was rescued and taken to the hospital.
The five victims on the coast of New Wales of the South were men who, according to police, were fishing or walking over stones along the coast when they fell or dragged to the ocean.
On Friday, the state police had published in their official account in X a warning to the bathers. “If you are in the water, remember to wear life vest and all safety equipment. Check the local weather forecast and, if in doubt, don’t go,” said the post.
Royal Life Saving Society data, a non -profit organization that promotes sea safety in the country, published by The New York Times, point out that 128 people drowned in New South Wales last year.
