There are many myths and truths that people talk about and, surely, you may have listened to any or even believed.

Thus, to help you eliminate doubts, in an Instagram post, the nutritionist (@valterneto1) denied some rumors and brought facts about the universe of food.

6 food myths you may have already believed

1. Eating bananas prevents cramps

Banana is an excellent source of potassium, essential for muscle contraction, but for the prevention and treatment of cramps there is no scientific record on the subject.

In contrast to this myth, a study by the medical magazine Muscle & Nerve Journal pointed out that the cramps happen more due to lack of fluids and mineral presence imbalance in the body.

2. “Cut the carbohydrate lose weight”

“Carbohydrates are important sources of energy for the body and should be part of a balanced diet. What is fattening is the excessive consumption of calories, regardless of the source. Priorize complex carbohydrates (whole, fruits, vegetables) and moderate the consumption of simple carbohydrates (sweets, white flour),” says the expert.

3. “Chicken meat is full of hormone”

The Ministry of Agriculture, since 2004, has banned hormones in chickens in all Brazilian states. Many people confuse hormones with genetic selection.

Genetic selection is the accelerated growth of some birds due to factors such as health, balanced nutrition and other factors.

4. “Cow’s milk is inflammatory and is bad”

“For people with cow’s milk protein allergy or lactose intolerance, milk can cause discomfort. However, for most of the population, cow’s milk is a good source of calcium and proteins and is not inflammatory,” says the nutritionist.

5. “Gluten is bad for everyone”

Gluten consumption does not cause health problems and do not need to be removed from food, as many people think. Unless there is medical advice in cases of celiac disease or gluten intolerance, which affect a small part of the population.

6. “Light and Diet foods are always healthier”

“Not always. Light and Diet foods may have a reduction in some nutrients, but they can be rich in others, such as sodium, fat or artificial sweeteners,” explains Valter.
