Beach hidden in Alentejo was refuge by Amália Rodrigues and is a well -kept secret

The Vincentian coast is one of the best preserved natural treasures in Portugal. Extending between the Alentejo and the Algarve, this coastal track is known for its wild beaches, imposing cliffs and unique biodiversity.

Far from mass tourism, many of their covers are accessible only by pedestrian rails, offering a more authentic and silent experience with the Atlantic.

Refuge of an immortal voice

In one of the most discreet recesses of the Alentejo coast is Praia da Amália, a virtually untouched corner that owes its name to fado singer Amália Rodrigues.

The Portuguese artist spent her vacation in the estate located over the cliff that fits this cove, as reported to.

A waterfall by the sea

Located in the municipality of Odemira, next to the small town of Brejão, this small beach is surrounded by vegetation and cliffs, and is mainly frequented by those looking for a distant refuge from the usual agitation.

One of its particularities is the existence of a small waterfall of freshwater in the far left, which drips from the slope directly to the sand.

How to get there

Access to the beach is not immediate. After following Brejão’s main road, it is necessary to turn left at a intersection, continue to find a sunflower painted by the road, and then turn right by a dirt path.

The route ends in a small wide where the car should be left. From this point, access is only on foot.

Rail between streams and vegetation

The pedestrian rail, about 10 minutes long, crosses a dense vegetation zone, with shadow provided by the trees and a stream that accompanies part of the route.

Although visually appealing, the path has some physical requirement and is not advised to people with reduced mobility or families with young children. It is also recommended to take only the essentials.

We recommend:

A scenario that is worth the effort

At the end of the rail, the reward: a landscape that opens directly on the sand and the Atlantic, in a natural framing that many visitors describe as “unforgettable”.

The isolation, the surroundings of the vegetation and the sound of the sea make up an environment of great tranquility.

Without support, but with authenticity

Because it is an unprepared and relatively conditioned access beach, support infrastructures are not available. Thus, it is recommended to bring water, food and sunscreen.

On higher hot days, the freshwater waterfall can serve as a refreshing alternative to the sea.

Protected area and natural heritage

Amália beach is part of the Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina Natural Park, one of the most relevant protected areas in Portugal.

The preservation of this type of nooks also depends on the behavior of visitors: it is essential to leave everything as you found and respect local biodiversity.

A deviation that pays off

If you are exploring the Alentejo coast, Amália Beach can be a great stop for those who appreciate nature, tranquility and unique landscapes.
