Transforming pollution into energy looks like a utopia. But scientists have just filed a way to do it… in short.
Researchers at the University of Tohoku, the University of Hokkaido and Azul Energy, Inc. have created an efficient method for converting carbon dioxide (CO2) into carbon monoxide (CI), an important component of synthetic fuels.
The main innovation is time: conversion ceases to take 24 hours to be done in only 15 minutes.
“A CO2 conversion to CO It is currently a hot theme to deal with climate change, but conventional techniques had large traps we wanted to solve, ”says scientist Liu Tengyi to.
“The materials were expensive, unstable, had a limited selectivity and took a long time to prepare. It would not be feasible to use them in a real industrial context,” he explains. Now everything has changed, and the cost of this technology has decreased.
The authors of this month in Advanced Science They explored different types of ftallocanines (PC) – including without metal (H2PC), iron (FEPC), cobalt (COPC), nickel (NIPC) and copper (Cupc) – as potential catalysts.
It was the cobalt ftalocanin (COPC), Low -cost pigment and metallic complex, which revealed the greater efficiency in CO2 conversion to CO.
The new system has a chain density of 150 mA/cm², and was able to maintain stable performance for 144 hours. Crystallization led to densely compacted moleculeswhich facilitated the efficient transfer of electrons to the surface.
“This is not only the best PC -based catalyst for CO production to date, but also successfully exceeds standard industrial thresholds for their reaction rate and stability,” Liu comments. “And the First Catalyst ever to be approved“.
This approach addresses one of the main strangles in synthetic fuel production, improving energy efficiency and reducing the costs associated with the use of CO2.
