Vatican releases first images of Pope Francis' wake

Vatican continues to share moments, including the Pope’s wake and the death occurred shortly after

The Vatican continues to give more details about the last hours of Pope Francis. After sharing what the leader of the Catholic Church told his personal nurse, he now makes known what happened on Monday morning, which lasted only two and a half hours.

After going to St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday, where he still appeared to the faithful, he rested in the afternoon and dinner “quietly.”

He woke up on Monday at 5:30 am (less one hour in mainland Portugal) with the first signs of unwilling, and there was soon an “immediate action of those who accompanied him”.

As soon as Massimiliano Strappetti said, his personal nurse, who wasn’t feeling good. An hour after being lying in his apartment, on the second floor of Casa Santa Marta, he eventually entered a coma.

“It hasn’t suffered. It was all very fast,” she can read on the Vatican News website, which cites sources close to the process.

“A discreet death, almost sudden, without long waits and much fuss to a Pope who always kept health conditions secret,” he reads.

Prior to confirmation, and around 7:00 am, the Vatican medical team received an emergency call of that same apartment. The transfer to Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where Francis had spent several weeks recently recently hospitalized. An urgent police escort has even been asked, but the rapid deterioration of the state of health made this escort useless.

The Vatican would eventually declare death at 07:35, after Pope Francis suffered one that eventually resulted in an “irreversible cardiovascular collapse”.

The last words

Among Pope Francis’ last words was a “thanks” to his personal nurse who helped the Pontiff surprise the crowds with a brief walk in his Paparmobile in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday, according to the Vatican’s media.

“Thank you for bringing me back to the square,” Francisco said Massimiliano Strappetti, the nurse who stayed next to the Pope during the five weeks of double pneumonia, the Vatican news agency said Tuesday.

After saving Pope’s life by suggesting colon surgery, Strappetti was Francis’ personal assistant since 2022. Strappetti was with the Pope during his recent long stay at the Gemelli Hospital of Rome and continued to take care of the pontiff while he recovered at his home at Santa Marta.

Prior to the Easter Sunday ceremony, Strappetti led the Pope to review the route he would do to the Basilica of St. Peter’s balcony. After the Mass, Francisco wanted to offer “a last and significant surprise to the 50,000 faithful” who had gathered in the square, the Vatican said.

But the sick Francis was hesitant, asking Strappetti, “Do you think I can do it?”

After walking the square and embracing members of the crowd, the Vatican said that a “tired but satisfied” Francis thanked Strappetti.

However, overnight, the Pope’s health began to deteriorate. On Monday morning early, he made a “farewell gesture” to Strappetti while lying in bed at his papal residence, the Vatican said. After entering a coma, Francisco had a “discreet death, almost sudden, without long suffering or public alarm.”
