In June 2018, while still in the jail of the Federal Police in Curitiba, a Pope’s emissary tried to give Lula a third that had been blessed by the religious. The Federal Police, however, did not allow its entry. The gift was later delivered accompanied by a ticket. The Holy See clarified after the gesture did not represent an official action of the Pope;

- June 2024 – The president and first lady Janja Lula da Silva were in Puglia, southern Italy, for the G7 summit. Francisco had been invited and had a meeting with the couple at the time.
As they met, Lula has always stressed that the conversations have revolved around convergent themes, such as the fight against hunger and social justice, and peaceful solutions to the wars in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip.
In 2022, Francisco that the investigation of Operation Lava Jato that led Lula to prison in April 2018, was started from “False media news that created a climate favorable to the trial”.
“It seems that there was no proper procedure. Here you have to be careful with those who set up the scenario of the procedure, whatever they are. They set it through the media in such a way that they have an effect on those who must judge and decide”Said the Pontiff in an interview published by the Spanish newspaper ABC.
In 2023, the Pope again commented on the matter and in an interview with Argentina C5N that Lula was unjustly convicted by Lava Jato and that former President Dilma Rousseff (PT) has “Clean hands” despite having suffered an impeachment.
