With the death of Pope Francis on Monday (21), in addition to the tributes and discussions about his succession, a doubt came back to the faithful and curious: after all, does the Pope receive a salary? How does the support of those who occupy the highest position of the Catholic Church?
Unlike heads of state from other countries, the Pope does not receive a fixed remuneration. As leader of the Catholic Church, all his needs – including housing, food, transportation and everyday expenses – are fully funded by the Vatican.

Practice follows a longtime tradition. Although the Vatican manages significant financial resources, the popes have historically led a modest life. Many of them intend gifts received during the pontificate to works of charity or religious institutions.
Francisco, who belonged to the Company of Jesus, a order that requires a vote of poverty, maintained this simple lifestyle throughout his papacy. When asked about money, he said he did not receive salary and that when he needed something, he directly asked the church administration. “If I need shoes, I ask. I know I’ll be fed,” he said in a humorous tone in 2023 in the documentary “Amen: Asking the Pope.”
Instead of occupying the official apartment at the Apostolic Palace, Francisco chose to live at Casa Santa Marta, a modest accommodation inside the Vatican. He also dismissed the use of luxury cars and followed a simplicity -oriented routine, in line with his pastoral view.

The only situation in which the Vatican provides for a monthly remuneration for a pontiff is in case of resignation to the position. This is what happened to Bento XVI, who, leaving the papacy in 2013, started to receive regular retirement as Pope Emeritus, in the time of 2,500 euros, according to the Italian newspaper Printing.
Heritage
Just like any citizen, but only on the goods acquired outside religious activity. These goods are not automatically transferred to the Church unless there is a will for this purpose.
If the pontiff has no direct heirs – such as living parents or siblings – and not leaving a will, heritage can be considered vacant and may be reversed to the state according to civil laws of the country of origin.
