A tourist on top spent a night without injuries. Rescuers warn of the risk of slipping and avalanche danger.
Mountain rescuers from the Polish Tatra volunteer rescue service (Topr) on Tuesday morning using a helicopter evacuated a tourist who was stuck at the top of Rysov. The man who went to the highest peak of Poland himself could not descend and spent the night at the top without injuries. This is reported by TASR newsletter in Warsaw, according to PAP.
The tourist contacted the Topr dispatching in Zakopan on Monday at 20.40. He announced that he had ascended to the Rysy, but during the descent he realized he couldn’t do it, so he returned to the top with the intention to wait until morning. Rescuers evacuated him by helicopter after dawn.
According to the rescuers, the tourist was not adequately prepared for conditions in the highest positions of the Tatras. During the hike he lost part of the equipment and missed the basic aids for winter hiking.
Despite increased traffic, Polish mountain rescuers mainly dealt with routine interventions during Easter holidays. On Saturday they intervened in two more serious cases when one tourist fell from the pavement between Zawrat and Šwinica and another tourist was injured by cats when falling on wet snow when descending from the rear grenade. On Sunday they helped the injured tourist at the Black Pleso Gasienicow.
Demanding conditions
Although the weather in the Tatras wishes hiking, there are still demanding conditions in higher altitudes. Above the upper limit of the forest, heavy and unstable snow is held, which increases the risk of slipping. The first stage of avalanche danger applies. In places without snow, the sidewalks are soaked and slippery, especially in the shade and on steep sections. Rescuers commemorate the need for winter equipment and experience with movement in the mountains.
