The State of São Paulo is developing an innovative climate financing mechanism called Finuclima, with plans to present it at COP30. The information was shared by Natália Resende, Secretary of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics of the State Government, in an exclusive interview with CNN Money.
According to Resende, the final aims to create an efficient and safe system to connect investors and donors with robust environmental projects in the state. “We needed to create a mechanism to be able to give this speed with accounting, with legal certainty,” explained the secretary.
The project, which has been developed since last year, has already made a call to select the management entity that will assist in the implementation of the mechanism. Fumbil, winner of five participants, will sign a seven -year cooperation, extendable for seven more.
Restoration of the Atlantic Forest
One of the highlights of São Paulo environmental policy is the restoration of the Atlantic Forest. For the first time in 2024, the recovered area surpassed the deforested area in the state, a significant milestone for conservation.
The state government mapped areas for reforestation, including 40,000 hectares within conservation units. An online platform was launched at last year’s COP, offering detailed information on these areas, including highway distance, the presence of water resources and the proximity of nurseries.
Resende also highlighted initiatives such as payment for environmental services and partnerships with small farmers. An example is the project with the Três Rios consortium in the Paraíba Valley, which included 63 producers and invested more than $ 10 million.
With these actions, São Paulo seeks not only to meet environmental goals, but also to create a green economy, integrating preservation and sustainable development.
