In recent weeks, the feud between Brazilians and Portuguese has gained strength on social networks, and all because of a somewhat peculiar meme, in which Portugal earned the nickname “Brazilian Guyana“.

Meme has gained prominence on platforms such as X, Bluesky and Tiktok by quoting the country as a “extension” of Brazil – both for its size on the map and the population number of the country – and for the constant jokes Portugal. However, the Portuguese were not so happy with the joke of Brazilians. But how was the meme that has been dominating social networks?

The birth of a meme

It all started in November 2024, when the Barcelona women’s soccer team officialized the signing of Portuguese player Kika Nazareth. Kika was announced on the team’s social networks in a somewhat similar way to what is used in Brazil, using the expression “Speak, guys!”.

It turns out that, after the announcement, numerous Portuguese users complained about the use of the expression, accusing the team of “Brasileirism” and lack of commitment to using phrases that are not part of the Portuguese daily life.

With the controversy gaining more and more forces on social networks, of course the complaint came to the Brazilians, who decided to take the joke for themselves and created the term “Brazilian Guyana”, to refer to the Lusitanian country as the new extension of Brazil.

The controversy (and the joke) continues

Over time, the expression gained even more strength, and numerous Portuguese influencers began to try to reverse the situation. One of these influencers, known as Nokas, published numerous videos on his Tiktok in which he appears complaining about jokes involving “returning the other stolen” from Brazil, the use of his country as “Brazilian colony”, and the fact that Brazilians find the Portuguese accent somewhat “old -fashioned”.

With the repercussion between Lusitanian influencers, Brazilian netizens decided to make the most of the situation and gave new nicknames to “Brazilian Guyana”, which only increased the controversy. Now, you can see names such as “Pernambuco on Foot”, “Walking Strip”, “Mato Grosso do Norte” and others increasingly creative nicknames to refer to Portugal – besides, of course, several videos and images that turn the “land” into a piece of Brazil.
