The United States will reduce duties to Chinese goods, but will by no means be zero, US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (22 April). TASR informs about this on the basis of a report by Reuters and DPA.
A duty of 145 % is very high and “it won’t be so much”. “He won’t be so high,” Trump told reporters in the White House. “It will decrease significantly, but it will not be zero,” he added. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt had previously stated at a press conference that she was talking to the President who had informed her about progress on a possible trade agreement with China.
Washington is currently registering proposals from more than hundreds of countries striving for a trade agreement, and the basics for an agreement with China are also placed, Lewitt added. According to her, China has already turned to Trump’s administration several times and very good interviews have been conducted.
At the beginning of the month, Trump escalated the business conflict by introducing tariffs into many countries. Meanwhile, he ordered their suspension for 90 days. However, in the case of China, special duties of up to 145 %are still applied. Beijing responded to Washington’s steps of 125 % retaliatory duties to the import of goods with the US.
