Text was motivated by occurrences of abuse and PET deaths on plane trips, such as the case of the pandora dog, lost 45 days, and the Joca dog, who died after an error in destination and inadequate transportation

Currently, Brazilian law is quite limited, allowing only guide dogs to travel in the cabin with their owners

O is about to vote on Wednesday (23) a proposal that can significantly change the rules for the of on domestic flights. The text, which has already undergone modifications in the house, aims to allow animals to be transported both in the cabin, along with the owners, and in the cargo compartment, depending on the size and weight of the animal. The original proposal, coming from the House of Representatives, was more restrictive, allowing only transport in the cabin and requiring airlines to track animals.

Currently, Brazilian law is quite limited, allowing only guide dogs to travel in the cabin with their owners. The new proposal, if approved, will force all airlines to offer animal transportation service, eliminating the current option to be an optional service. This bill, known as “Joca Law”, was motivated by a tragic incident involving the death of a Golden Retiever dog, who died after being sent to a wrong destination in April last year.

If the Senate approves the text, it will return to the House of Representatives for a new analysis. If approved again, it will go to the sanction of the President of the Republic. In addition, the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) will have the responsibility to regulate the guidelines established by the new law. These changes are expected to bring more safety and comfort to animals and their owners during air travel.
