Trump’s duties for steel, aluminum and cars from the EU have triggered tensions, but Brussels hopes for an agreement that could lead to their cancellation.
The European Union will not renounce its important trade ties with the United States, despite the uncertainty resulting from President Donald Trump’s customs policy, the European Commissioner for the Economy Valdis Dombrovskis said on Wednesday in Washington. According to the AFP report, TASR reports this.
The European Commissioner stressed that “the European Union does not give up our closest, deepest and most important partnership with the United States”. Both sides are likely to be even more needed in an increasingly conflicting and competitive world, Dombrovskis thinks.
New business cooperation
However, in addition to the deepening of existing partnerships, the euroblock will also conclude new cooperations around the world to diversify and strengthen EU economic security.
Trump introduced so -called reciprocal duties to import to the US at the beginning of April. It was postponed on Wednesday, April 9, 90 days for most countries except China. Trump wanted to impose 20 % duties on EU imports. However, since it postponed them, the European Union has also suspended retaliatory steps and is trying to agree.
Trump’s duties on steel and aluminum
The US President also focused on specific sectors in the EU, when he introduced 25 % duties on steel and aluminum in addition to car imports. Brussels hopes that Trump can cancel these duties by agreement.
In the field of security and defense of the European continent, Trump is right, according to Dombrovskis, that Europe must take more responsibility. In his speech, the European Commissioner also expressed the support of Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression and emphasized the need to achieve a fair and permanent peace.
