The WHO faces a budgetary problem after the US funding restriction, leading to the dismissal of employees and reducing activities.
The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhan Ghebreyesus admitted on Tuesday that the US financing restriction has created gaps in the budget of the organization belonging to the under. As a result, the WHO must limit its activities and dismiss part of the employees. According to the AFP report, TASR reports this.
“For a sudden decline in revenue, we lack funding and there is nothing else to do but reduce the scope of our work and reduce the number of employees,” Tedros explained in the speech. Meanwhile, the WHO is preparing for the planned withdrawal of the United States from the organization, which will happen in January next year.

The US did not pay the agreed membership fees for 2024 and the government of US President Donald Trump refused to pay fees for 2025 and frozen almost all foreign aid. However, several other countries are also reducing their expenditure on foreign aid.
The WHO is currently considering adjusting the organizational structure that Tedros presented on Tuesday to employees and Member States of the organization. “The US refusal to pay its membership fees for 2024 and 2025, along with a reduction in official development aid by some other countries, means that we will miss $ 560 to $ 650 million for 2026 and 2027,” Tedros said.
The chief of the organization did not specify how many jobs he will be canceled, but said that the dismissal will most significantly interfere with the headquarters of the organization in Geneva. “We are starting to reduce the number of jobs in higher management,” he said.
