The city of Rio Branco, administered by Mayor Tião Bocalom (PL), who fulfills his second term after reelected in the first round in the 2024 elections, was chosen as a highlight to join the Urban Environmental Management Guide in the Municipalities of the Legal Amazon, an initiative that recognizes exemplary sustainability actions that can be replicated by other municipalities in the region. Among more than 70 registered projects, the Acrean capital stood out with the proposal “Green Cycle: Cultivating Sustainability”, designed by the Rio Branco City Hall through the Municipal Secretariat of Environment.

The project is executed at the Solid Waste Treatment Unit (UTR) and consists of the composting of organic waste such as fruits, vegetables and leftovers from selective collection. This material is transformed into organic fertilizer, used in school gardens, areas of urban landscaping and, especially, in the unit’s own vegetable garden, which supplies with about 40 kg weekly vegetables the Popular Restaurant of Rio Branco. The initiative feeds about 650 people daily, including users of the reception centers and the passage house for immigrants.
For the Municipal Secretary of Environment, Flaviane Stedille, the selection in the announcement is an important milestone. “The idea of the guide is to gather examples of success in urban environmental management. Among more than 70 proposals, the Rio Branco project has been recognized as a good practice. The green cycle involves composting in UTRE, and the generated compound is used from school gardens to urban afforestation and landscaping. This generates resource savings and strengthens the food security of the municipality.

In addition to strengthening the fight against waste and fostering the circular economy, the project has a strong social impact. He directly benefits more than 100,000 people in the Baixada da Sobral Regional, where the Popular Restaurant is located. The main ones are vulnerable people, such as the elderly, homeless people, solo mothers and immigrants. With the expansion of selective collection, the goal is also to reach family farming.
Mayor Tião Bocalom highlighted the commitment of management to sustainable development. “We are really taking good ideas from paper and putting into practice. This is a clear example of how environmental actions can be effective and directly benefit the population. It’s more than speech: it’s a result.”
In addition to environmental and social impacts, the project is financially viable and easily replicable in other municipalities. According to the plan presented, the implementation also involves partnerships with other municipal secretariats, strengthening the integrated performance of the city’s bodies in promoting welfare and social justice.
