Giant pineapple land, Tarauacá celebrates 112 years of history and emancipation

This April 24, 2025, the municipality of Tarauacá, located in northwestern Acre, celebrates 112 years of foundation. Known as the “Giant Pineapple Land”, the city stands out for its rich history, cultural diversity and importance in the state scene.

The origin of Tarauacá dates back to the early twentieth century, with the formation of the village of Vila Seabra, at the confluence of the Tarauacá and Muru rivers. On April 24, 1913, the village was elevated to the city category, adopting the name Tarauacá, in honor of the river that bathes it. The region was initially inhabited by indigenous peoples of Iauanauás ethnic groups and Panuquinas, which still maintain their traditions and living cultures in the area today.

Among the most awaited events is the Pineapple Festival, held annually in September. The event celebrates the main agricultural symbol of the municipality, which produces exceptional pineapples – some weighing more than 15 kg. The festival brings together musical shows, contests, regional cuisine and an agricultural fair that attracts visitors from all regions of the state.

With an estimated population of more than 43,000 inhabitants, Tarauacá is Acre’s third most populous municipality, surpassing cities like Sena Madureira. The city has a balanced distribution between the urban and rural areas, with a demographic density of approximately 1.48 inhabitants per square kilometer.

Despite the advances, Tarauacá faces challenges, especially related to environmental preservation. In 2023, the municipality was included in the list of priority areas for deforestation prevention and control actions in the Amazon, according to the Ministry of the Environment Ordinance.
