The choice of clothing for a papal audience is not left at random. The Vatican is governed by a rigorous protocol of clothing, especially in meetings with the Pope. However, there is an exception that has aroused curiosity and fascination: the so -called “white privilege”.
The privilege reserved for six women
This privilege is granted only to some women belonging to Catholic real houses.
It is a symbolic gesture of Vatican’s deference and respect, which allows these sovereign to present themselves before the Pope dressed in white, color traditionally associated with purity, peace and authority.
According to Protocol expert Anitta Ruiz, quoted by, “the privilege of using white is an exception in the Vatican protocol that allows certain queens of Catholic countries to wear white rather than traditional black, in the Pope hearings.”
