Only 6 women around the world can use white in meetings with the Pope: see who they are and the reason

The choice of clothing for a papal audience is not left at random. The Vatican is governed by a rigorous protocol of clothing, especially in meetings with the Pope. The general standard states that visitors should dress modestly and, in the case of women, in black clothes. However, there is an exception that has aroused curiosity and fascination: the so -called “white privilege”.

The privilege reserved for six women

This privilege is granted only to some women belonging to Catholic real houses.

It is a symbolic gesture of Vatican’s deference and respect, which allows these sovereign to present themselves before the Pope dressed in white, color traditionally associated with purity, peace and authority.

According to Protocol expert Anitta Ruiz, quoted by, “the privilege of using white is an exception in the Vatican protocol that allows certain queens of Catholic countries to wear white rather than traditional black, in the Pope hearings.”

Women who currently enjoy this privilege are:

-Rehan Letizia from Spain

-Rainha Sofía de Spain

-Rainha Paola da Belgium

-Mainha Matilde da Belgium

-Duquesa Gran Maria Teresa do Luxembourg

-Princesa Charlene Do Monaco

-Princesa Marina Doria (wife of the head of the Italian Real House)

Historical and Symbolic Meaning

The use of white in these contexts is far from a matter of style. In the Vatican, the white color is traditionally associated with the figure of the Pope.

The privilege of white is therefore a symbol of honor and recognition of a historical connection to the Catholic Church.

Although not coded in official documents, this protocol has been respected over the decades, remaining as a sign of continuity between tradition and modern diplomacy.

A gesture that communicates more than words

When a queen arises dressed in white before the Pope, he is publicly affirmed the continuity of the ties between his royal home and the Vatican.

In addition, a message of faithfulness and respect for Catholic doctrine is conveyed.

The gesture is, therefore, both ceremonial and politician, albeit wrapped in symbolism.
