Scientists predict other strong shocks in Turkey, the epicenter was near Istanbul

At least 236 people suffered injuries in a severe magnitude earthquake of 6.2 and the subsequent approximately 300 dotras, which hit the Istanbul and the surrounding area on Wednesday. Turkish Health Minister Kemal Memišoglu reported on Thursday, TASR writes, according to DPA and AP reports.

Most (173) injured in Istanbul, said Memišogl on the social network X. Many were injured when they ran out of buildings in panic, and fifteen had to treat injuries in the hospital.

Structural damage

Preventively evacuated 12 buildings and damages after shocks reported to a total of 378 buildings, said Turkish Minister of Environment and Urbanization Murat Kurum. One abandoned building collapsed in the historic district of Istanbul.

Wednesday’s earthquake was shallow, the shocks were based on a ten -kilometer depth, and their epicenter was about 40 kilometers southwest of Istanbul, according to the US Geological Service in the Marmara Sea. They were felt by the inhabitants of the surrounding provinces and even the distant city of Izmir.

Expecting other shocks

Hundreds of drains occurred along the tectonic breaks in the Marmaque Sea, many of them had magnitude 4 or higher, the Turkish Office for Managing Calculation Afads.

Turkey is located in one of the seismically active regions in the world, and more than a million buildings are considered to be insufficiently against shocks in Istanbul itself.

Moreover, seismologists and geologists, according to DPA, now usually agree in the forecasts, in accordance with which the area should still have another strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 or even higher, although it is not yet apparent, in which time horizon.

Many residents of Istanbul, worried about other shocks, had night outdoors, slept in cars or set up in parks or other open areas. Many of them also traveled from the city, while hotels on the Turkish coast of the Aegean Sea reported a significant increase in bookings and many flights to other Turkish cities were fully occupied.

Preventive measures

In Istanbul for two days (Thursday and Friday), schools were closed and children were created with a four -day time off with the coming weekend. However, despite concerns about other shocks, some employees, according to the DPA, asked to physically enter the work.

At the same time, the Turkish Red Crescent began to deliver food to people who remained in common shelters. Afad urged people to avoid potentially endangered buildings and warn that drucks could still persist for some time.
