The Freida McFadden phenomenon: Yes, the form is always the same - and then?

Freida Mcfadden

The mysterious doctor, who will be more writer than a doctor. 17 books in 5 years; And they come more. Sales Queen in Portugal.

Freida McFadden. A few years ago, when the pandemic appeared for example, no one knew who it was. Since 2020 has published… 17 books. It is a worldwide phenomenonit is Sales Queen in Portugal.

In fact, the writer is not even named Freida McFadden. How is it really called? No one knows. What is known about your life? Little, very little: will be 44 years old, is a doctor specializing in brain problems, apparently works in Boston. And that’s it. That’s it.

The call “mystery”. And it’s a bit. It suddenly appeared in the literary world and quickly became a “star.” But it rarely appears, we wear wig when it appears, with clothes that do not wear on other days…

The “McFans” readers community does not admit but, given the cadence of publications, some ask if it is the chatgpt to write for it – something that would be a little complicated, because this “friend” only appeared in late 2022.

The publisher in Portugal is the soul of books. Ricardo Antunes, from this publisher, summarizes at SIC: “Success is Boca Boca. It’s people like the books. Books that read fast. Often there is a strong female character, who usually has some kind of difficulty or problem or has been involved in small crimes or great crimes and trying to recompose his life. ”

In truth, The form is the same. The style does not leave that. We easily found in a reader sharing that asks: “I feel her books are all similar, the same? Beautiful husband, female character, a nurse or housewife, a jealous cliché. There are even phrases that she uses in two books“.

But… “I can’t avoid reading her all the books. I’m addict, I love the suspense and the twists. Anyone else sees many similarities and the same things in her books? ”

Yes, someone else sees

We found Inês Martinho, A reader in love with books by Freida McFadden. Confirms that the form is the same – what then? If it results… and the unexpected twists give it a special touch. On April 23, World Book Day, we shared Inês’s analysis.

ZAP – What do you think this phenomenon originated?
Inês – I don’t remember how it started. I remember that, overnight, it was only spoken of Freida McFadden. I think I started hearing about her at Tiktok. However, they had already left about 3/4 books in Portugal when, a friend (also crazy about books), lent me the maid. I devoured the book in a few hours, and was completely clinging to Freida’s writing. However I read all the remaining ebook. And they are books that I read, normally, one afternoon or between the end of one night and one afternoon.

Zap – There are reports that the scheme, the sequence of books is always the same. Confirm? What is different between books?
Inês – Well, yes. I confirm that, reading some books of her, you can see that they are all of the same “form.” That is, the story is completely addictive, you know that the plot will be gaping you, but if you think you know what will happen, it is nothing of what you are thinking. I already gave up trying to guess because to this day, I haven’t got it right. What is different among books is the story itself. I think they fit them in the category of Trilha/Suspense/Drama. But yes, the development scheme of the stories is, deep down, the same.

ZAP – And do you think you work? And is there any harm in that?
Inês – I don’t feel like there’s something wrong. It’s a scheme she uses and has already realized it works. It seems to me that it is the way she write (with some extras to captivate and grasp the reader) but deep down works and there is nothing wrong with it. I’ve started a book to think: Okay, there we will find something that, after all, it will be nothing of this. And when does she give a final plot even on the last page? It happened to the teacher and I jaw dropped to sue it for a few hours. It is also the only author who can get me out of a literary hangover, it works perfectly. However, in my opinion, her books have a defect: they are so addictive (almost like a drug) that then it can become difficult to read other things. It cost me at the beginning, now it’s quiet.

Interestingly, the day Inês answered us, it was announced that it will be published on June 5. “They don’t stop,” Inês reacted – who is certainly already waiting for this news…
