Two Swedish fighters belonging to the NATO mission took off on Thursday to a Russian reconnaissance plane, which was approaching the Polish airspace over the Baltic Sea. This was announced by the Swedish armed forces, said TASR, according to AFP.
“The plane was near the Polish airspace, so we took off to signal our presence, make visual identification and escort it from this area,” said AFP spokeswoman Swedish Air Force Theresa Akerstedt.
Swedish fighters, which are dislocated at the base in Malbork, Poland in the NATO mission, identified the machine as a Russian exploratory aircraft type Iliushin IL-20. According to the Swedish army, the intervention was intervented in the international airspace.
