Washington (Reuters)-The White House said on Wednesday that the fines imposed by the European Union against Apple and the goal are a “new form of economic extortion” that the United States will not tolerate.
Why is it important
Apple and the goal were fined 500 million euros and 200 million euros respectively on Wednesday, as antitrust regulators of the European Union applied the first sanctions according to historical legislation that seeks to restrict the power of large technology companies.
EU fines can increase tensions with US President Donald Trump, who has threatened to charge tariffs against countries that penalize US companies.
CONTEXT
This Wednesday, the White House called the legislation, the Digital Markets Law (DMA), discriminatory.
Fines follow a one -year investigation from the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm on the compliance of companies with DMA, which seeks to allow smaller rivals to enter markets dominated by the largest companies.
