The Rio de Janeiro and Niterói candidacy dossier to host the 2031 Pan American Games provides for the installation of the athletes village on the ground attached to the former Leopoldina Station, in the Center, a place that goes through revitalization bench by Rio de Janeiro.

The project foresees the construction of seven 18 -story buildings and the installation of courts on the train line and subway that passes in the region. She would receive 7,500 athletes and 2,800 technicians, with apartments with two or three bedrooms.

As Sheet On Tuesday, Rio and Niterói showed R $ 3.8 billion the expense of the Pan-2031, if they are chosen as headquarters.

The cost does not include infrastructure works, such as building buildings, which must be delegated to private initiative to future residence marketing. Contains only the cost of furniture, services and operation of the place: R $ 113.8 million

The PAN-2031 candidacy dossier, still on completion, should be delivered until April 30 to Panam Sports, responsible for defining the headquarters. In addition to Brazilian cities, Asuncion (Paraguay) expressed interest in hosting the event.

According to dossier data, the most distant competition sites of the athletes’ stay are the 33 km Deodoro Sports complex and 34 km Itacoatiara Beach. The choice of the place is due to the fact that it is at the center of the five major areas of dispute.

The choice of the place of the village also aims to accelerate a new front of the revitalization of the carioca port area, near Avenida Francisco Bicalho. Unlike areas near the Olympic Boulevard, the region is still in the offering of new residentials.

The seven buildings will be on the ground behind the station, also known as Barão de Mauá Station. The place was about 20 years in complete abandonment. Last year, the City of Rio de Janeiro began the restoration of the facade of the historic building. The project already provided for the construction of popular housing units, as well as a convention center.

Designed by Scottish architect Robert Prentice, Barão de Mauá station has London inspiration. In the courtyard, metallic vaults decorated the ceiling, in a structure similar to the one seen at Light Station in São Paulo. The facade resembles Buckingham’s palace.

The station was inaugurated in 1926 and for decades was used for local, intercity trips – specially to the cities of Petrópolis, in the mountain region, and three rivers, in the south of Rio de Janeiro – and interstate, to Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo and São Paulo.

The last silver train left Barra Funda station, west of São Paulo, on the night of November 29, 1998, and arrived at the station in downtown Rio de Janeiro, the morning of the next day. It was the last interstate trip of a glamorous carioca railway station, disabled completely in 2004.
