Latvian Minister of Defense Andris Sprus announced on Friday that the planned construction of a defensive barrier along the eastern border of Latvia with Russia and Belarus, which is to be completed until 2028, is progressing well. According to the DPA report, TASR reports this.
“Work is under plan,” said the Minister of Defense during a visit to the warehouse in the city of Zilupe near the border with Russia, where there are stored a number of concrete and tank barriers to be built to fortify and secure the eastern border of Latvia.
Plans to defend the borders
DPA notes that Riga’s goal is to create a defense line by which the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania will ensure their borders with Russia and its close ally Belarus before any attacks.
According to the Spruds of the Latvian army, protective facilities are to allow the country and its population. “The main goal is to stop, dispel and destroy a potential distortion,” the Minister of Defense said.
Investments in safety
According to the plan, anti -tank ditches and ammunition and mine warehouses should also be built.
The anti -tank ditches will be reinforced with concrete blocks and other structures, such as the so -called dragon teeth. The distribution of obstacles will be adapted to the terrain using natural conditions – marshes or forests.
The construction of the defense line is finished on some sections of a 400 kilometer -long border with Russia and Belarus.
Last year, the Latvian government decided to invest 303 million euros in strengthening borders with Russia and Belarus. This year, the government will allocate EUR 45 million for this year. Among other things, the country will buy mines and sensor systems. Air defense and cooperation with the local industry should also be strengthened, DPA writes.
