Medical procedure promises to remove microplastics from the body; Does it work?

In addition to being disseminated in nature, recent research has revealed that microplastics, small plastic particles with less than five millimeters in diameter, are present in various organs and tissues of the human body, such as brain, heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, placenta and body fluids.

These fragments enter the human organism in various ways, from ingestion of contaminated food and water to inhalation of suspended particles in the air.

Although there are still many uncertainties on the long -term effects of exposure to microplastics on human health, several studies connect the presence of particles in arterial plaques to a significant increase in heart attacks, strokes and mortality in general. Now a group of London doctors, from Clarify Clinics, specializing in blood detox treatments, is offering its customers a service that promises to remove all microplastics from their blood.

According to the company’s CEO, Yael Cohen, the tailored blood filtering service called Clari by Marker, approved with CE certification (European conformity) offers an innovative approach to reducing inflammation and improving patients’ overall well-being, ”she told Wired.

In an interview with Wired, Cohen explains that the innovative treatment of Clarity Clinics offers personalized blood filtering service on her London branch. Treatment uses the Aforese technique, traditionally employed in plasma plasma donations and plasma exchange therapies.

In the unit, the clinic serves weekly 10 to 15 people. After consultation, the patient settles in an armchair while the blood is removed by a cannula, and separated into plasma and blood cells.

During the procedure, which lasts about two hours, plasma is filtered to remove microplastics and other unwanted substances, before being reintroduced in the patient’s body. According to Cohen, between 50% and 80% of plasma volume can be processed at a time.

During a session, whose value exceeds US $ 12,000 (about R $ 70 thousand)“Patients attend calls, zooms, watch movies, sleep. Those who sleep are my favorites,” says Cohen. “Once it is working, you don’t feel anything. It’s very comfortable,” he concludes.

For her, the reasons that lead patients to Clarify are varied, and include chronic fatigue, “brain mist”, long covid, and concerns about fertility or dementia. However, the scientific effectiveness of the procedure is still the subject of debate.

Is clari treatment effective?

Even widely documented, observing the correlation between the presence of microplastics in the body and certain health problems does not prove that microscopic fragments are the cause of these problems. Without this causal relationship, Clarify procedures operate in a gray area.

This means that although the Londrina clinic sells Esperança, when it offers treatments that supposedly remove microplastics, PFAS (per and polyfluoroalchil substances) and blood pesticides, science does not yet confirm that contaminants really cause health problems.

This lack of enough evidence to confirm the cause and effect relationship are part of a 2022 WHO report. In it, the health agency does not claim that microplastics are safe, but recognizes that its potential risks remain unknown.

Although recent scientific studies found associations between the presence of microplastics in the body and damage to cells and hearts, these studies are classified as “observational”, in which researchers only observe and record data without intervening or controlling variables.

Still, the method is based on plasmapheresis, a legitimate medical procedure recognized as safe and beneficial to treat certain conditions such as autoimmune and neurological diseases. But not necessarily effective for removing microplastics from the human body.
