He said this Thursday (24) at an event at the USP Faculty of Law that it is important to preserve historical memory and ensure reparation mechanisms to defend Brazilian democracy, and praised the judiciary for being fulfilling this role.
He participated in the launch of the book “Defense of Democracy in 21st Century Brazil – controversial and contemporary aspects of defensive democracy”.
“We had an attempt to coup. And what does a coup of state mean? It means that my freedom of expression will be curtailed,” he said. “There is no future without memory and reparation. And who is currently doing memory and reparation is the judiciary,” said the minister.
Also attending the event was the substitute minister of the Superior Electoral Court Edilene Lobo, who highlighted the role of Electoral Justice in protecting the democratic process, especially in view of the challenges brought by the digital age.
Author of the book, jurist Gustavo Justino de Oliveira said that the work “represents one of the ways to act through concrete actions in facing our contemporary problems, such as undemocratic attacks, abuses of institutional power, attacks on administrative bureaucracy and reflect on how we can seek solutions together.”
Also author of the work, Eduardo de Carvalho Rêgo said that the National Prosecutor’s Office for the defense of democracy, instituted by, “is an institutional instrument that expresses the defense of democracy, not as a reaction but as proactive public policy.”
