Collor was sentenced to 8 years and 10 months for corruption and money laundering in an offshoot of Lava Jato
Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) denied on Thursday (24) the appeals presented by former President Fernando Collor de Mello against his conviction at 8 years and 10 months in prison, resulting from an deployment of Operation Lava Jato. In the decision, Moraes ordered Collor’s arrest and the immediate beginning of the sentence, classifying resources as “merely delaying.”
In response to a request from Moraes, the president of the Supreme Court, Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, scheduled a session in the virtual plenary for the other ministers to analyze the decision. The session will start at 11am this Friday (25) and will end at 11:59 pm on the same day. Until then, the arrest warrant remains valid and can be executed at any time.
“After the communication of the execution of the arrest warrant, pursuant to Article 66, X, of the Criminal Execution Law c/c. Art. 13 of Resolution 113 of the National Council of Justice, the Court of Criminal Execution Court of the Federal District (VEP/DF) shall proceed with the certificate of penalty to be fulfilled by the inmate Fernando Affonso Collor de Mello,” informs the minister.
Remember the case
In 2023, former President Fernando Collor was sentenced to 8 years and 10 months in prison for crimes of corruption and money laundering. The conviction refers to a case in which, according to the prosecutor, Collor would have received R $ 29.9 million in bribes related to Bus Distribuidora, subsidiary of Petrobras, in the fuel sales sector. The transfers occurred between 2010 and 2014.
In November last year, the Federal Supreme Court (STF), by 6 votes to 4, rejected the appeals presented by Collor’s defense and upheld the sentence. Besides him, entrepreneurs Luis Pereira Duarte de Amorim and Pedro Paulo Bergamaschi de Leoni Ramos, accused of involvement in the scheme were also convicted. The bribes would have been paid to easily facilitate contracts between BR Distribuidora and the company UTC Engenharia, focused on the construction of fuel distribution bases.
