The doctor of the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, Sergio Alfieri, has revealed this Thursday the last moments of life of Pope Francis. Alfieri explained that he found the pontiff in his room with his eyes open, but without response to stimuli. They decided not to transfer him to the hospital, respecting his desire to “die at home”, in the Vatican residence of Santa Marta.
According to the doctor, Francisco was in a coma and had expressly asked to avoid invasive measures such as intubation. “He died shortly after, without added suffering,” he explained. He also explained that the Pontiff had serenely assumed his status, even participating in acts such as his last public appearance on Resurrection Sunday.
The official medical part indicates that the cause of death was a stroke that resulted in a coma and, subsequently, in a cardiocirculatory arrest.
