From January 1, 2025, the collection of tolls on some highways was eliminated, but the machines of the electronic toll system remain in operation. These machines allow national and foreign vehicles to add to the electronic toll system simply and quickly.
What is the electronic toll system?
Although tolls are no longer charged on certain roads, the electronic toll system remains relevant to those who travel to other highlights with tolls in force in Portugal. This system allows drivers to register your vehicle and use a payment device for the tolls on the charge.

The PS parliamentary group in Faro questioned the government about the alleged improper collection, which led IP to explain the situation.
“Since the beginning of 2025, the highlights with the elimination of toll charges have maintained the adhesion machines, an option for foreign vehicles that need to circulate in highlights with toll,” the company said in a statement.

The reform of the tolls and the use of the system
The change was driven by Law No. 37/2024 of 7 August, which ended with the collection of tolls on several highways, including A22, A4, A23, among others. The purpose of the legislation is to promote circulation on roads where there are no quality and safety alternatives.
