The government of US President Donald Trump will flexible and exempt some federal testing rules for testing purposes, to help Elon Musk’s Tesla such as Tesla developing autonomous cars so that they can compete with China rivals, the transport department announced on Thursday 24.
The folder also said it will simplify accident reports involving autonomous software and advance to a single set of national rules for technology.
“We are in a race to innovate more than China, and the risks could not be bigger,” transport secretary Sean Duffy said in a statement. “Our new structure will reduce bureaucracy and bring us closer to a unique national standard.”
The announcement of the changes came a day after Musk, which classified the old rules as “unfair”, confirming that the electric vehicle manufacturer will begin the implementation of automaker’s autonomous taxis in Austin, Texas, in June.
It is unclear how exemptions to the rules of the National Traffic Safety Administration (NHSA) will affect Tesla specifically. Source: Associated Press.
