On Tuesday (22 April), the Orava village of Babín and its surroundings were hit by a stationary storm. It fell 60 millimeters (mm) of precipitation within two hours. In the Orava Magura Mountains, more than 70 mm of rainfall. Half of the rainfall was in the form of hail. The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMI) informed about it on its website.
“There are two amateur rainfall in the village of Babín, which recorded rainfall from 58 to 70 mm. The nearest collision station SHMI is in Lokc, where it fell almost 25 mm, in Orava Podzámok 15.3 mm. Intensive precipitation accompanied by strong hail, they did great damage to property, ”said meteorologists. The flood in the grandmother was determined as 200-300 years old.
Flood flows in the rocky stream basin were caused by spilling existing bridges, clogging of the culverts, flooding of cellars and garages, clogging of the ditch and damage to roads. According to SHMI, the amount of precipitation in the form of hail, which helped reduce the maximum outflow and thus damage to property, fell in the storm. “At the time of off -road survey and measurements (after 12 hours from the flood), they remained in the fields, gardens and rigols of hail in layers up to 75 centimeters,” Experts noted.
