The Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni received this Saturday the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, at a meeting where both supported the initiative of US President Donald Trump of getting a ceasefire with Russia and “A lasting peace in Ukraine.”

“At the meeting, the leaders reiterated their support from President Trump’s efforts to achieve just and lasting peace that guarantees a future of security, sovereignty and freedom to Ukraine,” said Meloni’s communication office in a statement.

The Italian Prime Minister expressed his condolences “by the victims of the recent Russian attacks” in Ukraine, “renewing the condemnation of such acts and marking the urgency of an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.”

Meloni also appealed “The need for a concrete commitment of Moscow to start the peace process”, and praised what he considered as “Full arrangement of Ukraine to an immediate ceasefire” that end with the war that has been going on for over three years.

“Now Russia is also expected to demonstrate its own desire to achieve peace concretely,” the Prime Minister insisted.

O Ukrainian President considered the meeting with Trump, whom he thanked the initiatives taken to finish with the war.

“We expect results in everything that has been discussed. Total and unconditional ceasefire. A safe and lasting peace that avoids another war. A very symbolic meeting that could become history if we achieve joint results,” said Zelensky.

Hours after the meeting, Trump threatened with new sanctions the Russian PresidentVladimir Putin, because “Too many people are dying” in Ukraine and the situation makes it seem that his counterpart “You don’t want to stop war“, he said on his page of the social network Truth Social.

“Putin had no reason to fire missiles against civil zones, cities and populations in recent days. It makes me think that may not want to stop war (…) and it has to be treated differently, through bank sanctions or secondary sanctions. Too many people are dying !!!”
