The coffin with the Pope is taken in a slow procession to the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome for burial. The procession, about 6 km, follows the center of Rome to Piazza Venezia, passing through the Colosseum, before turning north to reach the church of Santa Maria Maggiore.
It is the first time in about a century that a Pope is buried outside the Vatican.
The public can only follow the procession behind barriers on the streets, not directly behind it.
Three thousand volunteers are positioned along the way to provide guidance, medical assistance and water to pilgrims, according to local authorities.

Burial within the church will not be open to the public, but crowds are already crowded outside.
