President Lula (PT), who was present at Pope Francis’ funeral today (26), said he did not see US President Donald Trump at the ceremony, but supports a dialogue between Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky to get an understanding of the war between Ukraine and Russia.
“I didn’t look to the side, I didn’t see Trump, actually,” Lula told the press after the funeral ceremony. The president was questioned by journalists about the meeting between Trump and Zelensky in Rome, moments before the start of the rites. A White House advisor told The New York Times that the conversation was “very productive.”

“I don’t know what they have talked about, I can’t intuit. I think what’s important is that if they talk and find a way out of this war, because this war is running out of explanation. No one can explain and nobody wants to talk about peace. The solution is to make the two feel at a negotiating table and find a solution not only for Ukraine and Russia, but also to the violence that Israel committed against Gaza.”

“Duty as Christians, religious and politicians,” says Lula about the Brazilian entourage to the funeral. The president thanked the presidents of the House and Senate, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB) and David Alcolumbre (Brazil-AP Union), the first lady Janja da Silva and other politicians for the presence. “People had effectively in Brazil a great appreciation for commitment as a man and religious of Pope Francis. I think it was a debt that we paid to a man who provided services to humanity,” he said.

Lula said he hoped the next Pope will have “the same heart” as Francis. “It worried about Gaza, hunger, with the things that live the people around the world. Our coming here is a thank you to God for allowing us to follow the departure of a man who marked history in this 21st century,” he said.
