“Peregrine with hope, guide and companion of the way towards the great goal to which we are called, heaven, on April 21 of the Holy Year 2025, at 7:35 am, while Easter light illuminated the 2nd day of the Angel, the beloved pastor of the Church, Francis, passed from this world to the Father. Faithfulness to the Gospel and the mystical wife of Christ.
Francisco was the 266th Pope. His memory remains in the heart of the Church and the whole humanity.
Jorge Mario Bergoglio, elected Pope on March 13, 2013, was born in Buenos Aires on December 17, 1936, son of Piemontese immigrants: his father, Mario, was an accountant, an employee of the railways, while his mother, Regina Sivori, took care of the home and education of the 5 children. Formed as a chemical technician, he then chose the path of priesthood, initially entering the Diocesan Seminary and, on March 11, 1958, joining the Novitiate of the Company of Jesus. He studied humanities in Chile and, back to Argentina in 1963, graduated in philosophy at the São José College in San Miguel. He was a professor of literature and psychology at the colleges of the Immaculate Conception of Santa Fe and at the Salvador College in Buenos Aires. He received priestly ordination on December 13, 1969 of Archbishop Ramón José Castellano and, on April 22, 1973, made the perpetual profession as Jesuit. After being a master of novices in Villa Barilari, San Miguel, professor of theology, consultant of the province of the company of Jesus and Rector of the College, on July 31, 1973 was appointed provincial of the Jesuits of Argentina. After 1986 he spent a few years in Germany to complete his doctoral thesis and, back to Argentina, became a collaborator near Cardinal Antonio Quaracino. On May 20, 1992, John Paul 2nd the named Bishop of Aca and Assistant of Buenos Aires. He chose as an episcopal motto misery atqueing eligendo and in his coat of arms inserted the Christogram IHS, symbol of the company of Jesus. On June 3, 1997, he was promoted to the Coadjuctor Archbishop of Buenos Aires and, with the death of Cardinal Quaracino, succeeded him on February 28, 1998 as Archbishop, Primate of Argentina, ordinary of the faithful of oriental rite in the country, grain-chancer of the Catholic University. João Paulo 2º Created Cardinal in the consistory of February 21, 2001, with the title of São Roberto Belarmino. In the following October, he was a deputy rapporteur of the tenth ordinary general meeting of the Bishops Synod.
He was a simple and very dear pastor in his archdiocese, who ran widely, including using subway and bus. He lived in an apartment and prepared his dinner himself, because he felt like any other.
Elected Pope by the cardinals gathered in Conclave after the resignation of Benedict 16, on March 13, 2013, he chose the name Francisco, because, following the example of the saint of Assisi, he wanted to have a priority look at the poorest in the world. From the balcony of blessings he presented himself with the words: “Brothers and sisters, good night! And now, let us begin this way: Bishop and people. This path of the Church of Rome, which presides in charity all the churches. A path of fraternity, of love, of trust among us.” And after tilting his head, he said, “I ask you to pray to the Lord to bless me: the prayer of the people asking for the blessing to your bishop.” On March 19, a solemnity of St. Joseph, officially began his petrine ministry.
Always attentive to the last and excluded of society, Francis, as soon as he was elected, he chose to live at Domus Sanctae Marthae, as he could not stay away from contact with people and, since the 1st Holy Thursday, wanted to celebrate Mass in Coena Domini outside the Vatican, going to arrests, disabled host centers or drug addicts. He recommended that priests are always available to manage the sacrament of mercy, to have the courage to get out of sacristies to look for the lost sheep and keep the church doors open to welcome those who seek the face of God the Father.
He exercised the petrine ministry with tireless dedication to dialogue with Muslims and representatives of other religions, calling them to prayer meetings and signing joint statements in favor of concord among the members of different religions, such as the document on human fraternity, signed on February 4, 2019 in Abu Dhabi with the Sunni leader al-Tayeb. His love for the latter, the elderly and children led him to institute the world days of the poor, grandparents and children. It also instituted the Sunday of the Word of God.
More than any predecessor, he expanded the College of Cardinals, calling ten consisting in which he created 163 cardinals, of which 133 voters and 30 non -voters from 73 countries, 23 of them representing a cardinal for the first time. Convened five assemblies of the Bishops Synod: Three Ordinary Generals, dedicated to family, young people and sinodality; an extraordinary, also about the family; and a special for the Pan-Amazon region.
His voice rose several times in defense of the innocent. With the COVID-19 pandemic, on the night of March 27, 2020, I wanted to pray alone in São Pedro Square, whose column symbolically embraced Rome and the world, for humanity frightened and wounded by the unknown. The last years of the pontificate have been marked by numerous peaceful appeals against World War I in pieces ongoing in many countries, especially in Ukraine, as well as in Palestine, Israel, Lebanon and Myanmar.
Following the hospitalization of July 4, 2021, lasting ten days, for surgery at the Agostino Gemelli Hospital, Francisco returned to the same hospital on February 14, 2025 for an hospitalization of 38 days due to bilateral pneumonia. Returned to the Vatican, he spent his last weeks of life at Casa Santa Marta, devoting himself to the end, with the same passion, to his petrine ministry, although still without full recovery. On Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, he last appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to grant the solemn blessing Urbi et Orbi.
Pope Francis’ doctrinal teaching was very rich. Witness of a sober and humble style, founded on the opening of missionary, apostolic courage and mercy, careful to avoid the danger of self -reference and spiritual worldliness in the Church, the Pontiff presented his apostolic program in the exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (November 24, 2013). Among the main documents stand out 4 Encyclicals: Lumen Fidei (June 29, 2013), about faith in God; Laudato Si ‘(May 24, 2015), which deals with ecology and human responsibility in climate crisis; Fratelli Tutti (October 3, 2020), about human fraternity and social friendship; and dilexit (October 24, 2024), about devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Promulgated 7 apostolic exhortations, 39 apostolic constitutions, numerous apostolic letters, most in the form of Motu itself, 2 holy years convening palls, in addition to catechesis at general hearings and speeches in various parts of the world. After instituting the secretariats for communication and the economy, as well as the dicker for the laity, family and life and for the service of integral human development, the Roman Curia with the Apostolic Constitution Praedicoate Evangelium (March 19, 2022) reform. He modified the canonical process for the causes of marriage nullity in the CCECO and CIC (MP Mitis et Miserricrs Iesus and Mitis Iudex Dominus Iesus) and made the legislation on crimes committed by clergy or vulnerable people more severe (MP Vos Lux Mundi).
Francis has left all an admirable testimony of humanity, holy life and universal fatherhood.
Pope’s burial
Pope Francis (21.abr) at the age of 88. The pontiff was in 700 years.
Francisco suffered from breathing problems. By 2023, he had spent 3 days hospitalized to treat bronchitis. In March 2024, he failed a speech during a Vatican ceremony.
In a break with tradition, Pope Francis asked to cope with zinc instead of the traditional set of 3 coffins. It will also be the 1st Pope over a century to be buried outside the Vatican.
By the end of 2023, the pontiff stated that there was already “prepared” His tomb in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maior, in the Esquilino neighborhood of Rome (Italy).
These changes in funeral procedures reflect the reformist approach that characterized the pontificate of Francis, prioritizing simplicity and humility even in its final rites.
