Pope Francis, who on Monday (21.br.2025), at the age of 88, will be buried this Saturday (26.abr) in the Santa Maria Maior Basilica in Rome (Italy). The pontiff will be the 1st in 356 years to be buried on the spot. The last was Pope Clement 9th, on December 9, 1669.
According to a report of the Catholic Media Network EWTN VaticanDespite being the 1st Pope in more than 3 centuries to make this choice, Francisco will not be the only pontiff buried on the spot. The remains of 7 other popes are in Santa Maria Maior: Honório 3rd, Nicolau 4th, São Pio 5th, Sisto 5th, Paul 5, Clemente 8º and Clemente 9th.

Pope’s funeral
Pope Francis’ coffin was during a liturgical rite held at the São Pedro Basilica on Friday (25.br.2025), at 20h (local time). The pontiff died at the age of 88 on Monday (21.abr) from heart failure and stroke (stroke).
The ceremony was chaired by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camelngo of the Catholic Church. The papal funeral took place on Saturday morning (26.abr), preceded by a mass at 10am (local time) in St. Peter’s Square.
Unlike other leaders of the Catholic Church, Francis will be buried in a simple wooden coffin by his own choice. The tradition is that the pontiff will be veiled in 3 interconnected coffins made of cypress, lead and oak, on a high platform in St. Peter’s Basilica.
