STF Most form to maintain prison of former President Collor

The Federal Supreme Court (STF) formed, on Friday (25), most votes to maintain the decision of Minister Alexandre de Moraes who determined the arrest of former President Fernando Collor.

To date, six court ministers have voted to maintain the minister’s individual decision. However, despite the majority formed, the trial was not finalized.

Cristiano Zanin is prevented from participating in the trial for acting as a lawyer in Operation Lava Jato cases before reaching the Supreme.

On Thursday (24), Moraes ordered the arrest of the former president to begin compliance with the conviction to 8 years and 10 months in prison for passive corruption and money laundering in one of Lava Jato’s lawsuits.

In 2023, Collor was convicted by the Supreme Court. According to the conviction, the former president and former senator, as former PTB leader, was responsible for political nominations for BR Distribuidora, a subsidiary company of Petrobras, and received R $ 20 million in improper advantages in the company’s contracts. According to the complaint, the crimes occurred between 2010 and 2014.

In determining the arrest, Moraes understood that Collor’s defense appeals to overthrow the conviction are delaying to avoid conviction.

Collor will be stuck in a prison in Maceió, where he lives.
