After the Mass, the body of Francis will be buried in the papal basilica of Santa Maria Maior in Rome, where seven other popes are buried.

Francis wrote in his will that he wanted his “last earthly journey to end this former Marian Sanctuary.” He requested a simple tomb without decoration, with only the inscription “Franciscus”, said the Vatican.

The churches of Rome will hold special masses in memory of Francis for nine days after the funeral.

Who is expected in the funeral?

World leaders and Catholic faithful from around the world must attend the funeral. Among the expected participants are: President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, US President Donald Trump, United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Stmerer, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, Argentine President Javier Milei, among others.

Where can I watch the funeral?

The funeral will start at 10am, local time (5am Brasília time), in São Pedro Square, the Vatican announced. THE Infomoney will follow the event in real time, and many Brazilian television networks, including Globo, GloboNews e CNN Brazil will broadcast it live. The funeral will also be broadcast by the Vatican news channel on YouTube, which has shown most of the rites.
