Originally in the history of art, the term “grotesque” designates a style oriented by the pursuit of horror and unusual, which can even cause laughter and disgust, as a counterpoint to harmonious beauty, typical of classical culture.
“The grotesque never causes indifference and, through it, Bolsonaro occupies a different space in the media beyond scandals,” says Aguiar. “Images cause indignation from their supporters or opposition, and indignation is the driving force of pockets.” The researcher states that although they transmit simplicity, photos have aesthetic sophistication.
“It combines itself with an idea of Brazilianness that is not predominant in the cultural movements of the 20th century,” says Aguiar. “We can think of the opposition between the pornochanchada and the new cinema.”
With the scenes, says Aguiar, Bolsonaro presents himself as an ordinary man and moves away from the liturgy of his office once held by him. The ordinary man becomes closer to militancy, subject to ambiguous feelings and may be both aggressive and religious.
