Most of us have ever happened that they have suddenly come to mind a question that has never occurred to them in their lives, even though it seems to be offered almost every step. We just take some things as a fact, nor do we think about them – for example: Why are most wines sold in bottles of 0.75 liters?
From today’s point of view, a straight liter of such fluid would be better counted, but the winemakers still stand by their own. The “Seven” is simply the right measure that will please, but people may not feel inappropriate if they drink it in the evening. Maybe half a liter would be little and a liter of power – who knows…
Back to the past
To get at least some shift to an explanation of a tricky question, we will have to go back to the past many years. One of the unlikely theories says that the wine bottle content is virtually equal to the capacity of human lungs. Why such a comparison? It is simple – in ancient times, of course, wine bottles were also produced at the furnaces using a glass whistle, in which the workers had to blow. In order for them to work better by hand, rather from the lungs, it could be good to adapt the size of the bottles to one proper inhalation. Will we believe such a theory?
Mathematically accurate
Even more likely, however, is the Anglo-French theory that speaks of simple numbers that in this case give logic. When the English longed for an excellent French wine, they just had it transported through the Lamansk Strait. It is still not about bottles, but barrels. To transport glass would be unnecessary and the load would be harder than necessary. Thus, the wine traveled in the so -called Barrique barrels with a standard volume of 225 liters. What does this mean for gallons, ie units commonly used in England? Nothing other than that it is straight 50 gallons – and it was well counted both in France and England.
And again …
Despite all these perhaps somewhat confused numbers, however, we are still not at the wanted volume of 0.75 liters, which can be found in most bottles of wine. 225 liters (if you want 50 gallons) can be divided into exactly 300 bottles without a drop of wine. Isn’t it actually a brilliant compromise? One gallon (approximately 4.5 liters) could be divided into six bottles, and it was possible to store them in a box without much loss of space for a change. Already at that time our ancestors had to pay attention to balanced logistics.
A little romance will not hurt
Even this explanation is still not strong enough to accept it as a possible reason for turning the wine in such large bottles? Wine theory says that this amount is enough for three glasses for lovers, two glasses for two friendly married couples, or for one sad loner who needs to drive away grief.
Authorities also joined
And to make matters worse, the 20th century came, which tried to establish order in this field, and therefore the standard was also introduced on wine discoveries. In short, a globalizing world needed rules, and when it is also possible to produce wine bottles with a different volume, 0.75 liters simply lead on the whole line, it is a classic that works. And why would we change something that simply has no mistake?
