The criminal action in the (Supreme Federal Court) that of the former President of the Republic also resulted in the conviction of two other people close to the former Senator of Alagoas.
Pedro Paulo Bergamaschi de Leoni Ramos and Luís Pereira Duarte de Amorim, who appeared as defendants in the same process, will comply with restrictive penalties of rights, and were not taken to the closed regime.
Pedro Paulo was convicted of passive. Luís Amorim was acquitted of the crime of corruption and convicted of money laundering. The two began on Friday to fulfill the “weekend limitation” penalties and “service to the community”.
Lawyer Milton Gonçalves Ferreira Netto, responsible for the defense of Luís Amorim, told the Sheetin a statement, that “the technical defense will not manifest, but only records that it respects and respects all the resolutions of the Supreme Court.” Amorim on Friday after the arrest.
The report was unable to respond from lawyer José Eduardo Rangel de Alckmin, ahead of Pedro Paulo’s defense. Throughout the process, they denied having committed the crimes pointed out by the PGR (Attorney General’s Office).
In the complaint made ten years ago, and signed by the then Attorney General Rodrigo Janot, Pedro Paulo is described as “private financial operator” by Collor and Luís Amorim is called the former senator’s “iron forehead”.
When the complaint was made in 2015, Collor was a senator and, due to the special forum, the case was treated by the Supreme Court. The PGR argued at the time that Luís Amorim and Pedro Paulo should also be tried by the Court, as they would have presented “conduct essentially linked to the parliamentarian, directly assisting him in the receipt and concealment of values of illicit origin”.
According to PGR, Collor commanded, between 2010 and 2014, a corruption scheme at BR Distribuidora, former subsidiary of Petrobras.
The investigators arrived at the case during Operation Bidone, one of the early stages of the, when there was search and seizure at the headquarters of one of the companies operated by the moneymaker Alberto Youssef, who later became one of the main whistleblowers of the investigation.
At the time, proof of cash deposit were found, in the total amount of R $ 50 thousand, in the then senator’s personal bank account, as well as a proof of cash deposit of R $ 17 thousand, in the account of one of the parliamentary companies, Gazeta de Alagoas.
Throughout the investigation, PGR concluded that Collor would have received more than R $ 20 million in bribes, through companies that obtained contracts with BR Distribuidora, including UTC Engenharia.
At the time, Luís Amorim, 64, who is a retired military police officer, driving in Maceió the companies Gazeta de Alagoas and a. According to PGR, the senator used his media companies to receive bribes, hence the charge against Luis Amorim of money laundering crime.
Pedro Paulo, 65, known as PP, is described in the complaint as a longtime friend of Collor. He was at the head of the Secretariat of Strategic Affairs of the Presidency of the Republic between 1990 and 1992, in the management of the former president.
After Collor’s impeachment, he started to act in the private scope, in business in the areas of infrastructure and energy. Its main company at the time of the complaint was GPI Participações e Investimentos S/A, from São Paulo, but, according to PGR, it would have control “of several other companies” that were used to collect values for Collor.
The former president was sentenced to 8 years and 10 months imprisonment, in an initial closed regime, due to the corruption scheme at BR distributor reported by PGR.
As part of Operation Lava Jato, authorities that accompany the remaining processes of the investigation point out that today there is only one person who is serving a sentence regarding convictions that have become res judicata, that is, when there is no more possibility of appeal.
