State Representative Emídio de Souza (PT) filed a bill in the São Paulo Legislative Assembly (Alesp) that proposes the alteration of the name of the Latin America Memorial to honor Pope Francis, killed last Monday (21).
The text suggests that the cultural center located in Barra Funda, west of the state capital, is renamed Latin America Memorial – Papa Francisco.
“By attributing the name of Pope Francis to the Latin American Memorial, the State of São Paulo recognizes the profound cultural, political and humanist value of one of the most influential figures of the 21st century, whose principles are in the ideals of Latin American integration, fraternity between peoples and valorization of cultural diversity that inspired the creation of the Memorial Foundation of Latin America itself“Says an excerpt from the project.
If the measure is approved, the Secretariat of Culture will have up to 90 days to implement the new denomination.
Pope Francis’ body was buried on Saturday (26) in. A funeral procession with 150,000 people took the Pontiff’s coffin to the church.
Processing
Prior to being analyzed by the Alesp Plenary, the project must pass by the Constitution, Justice and Writing Committee and, if necessary, by a thematic committee related to the measure.
To be approved, the project needs the votes of at least 48 parliamentariansnumber that corresponds to half plus one of the total deputies of the Assembly.
In case of approval, the proposal goes to the sanction of Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans).
