The court determined that the city of Sorocaba arranged, within 45 days, the transfer of Elephant Sandrocurrently sheltered in the Quinzinho de Barros Municipal Zoo, for the Brazil Elephant Sanctuary, located in Chapada dos Guimarães (MT).

The decision complies with a request from prosecutor Jorge Marrum of the São Paulo Public Prosecution Service (MPSP).
Animal transport should follow strict technical planning, which includes the presence of a veterinarian specializing in large mammals, Sandro’s prior adaptation to the transport container and continuous clinical monitoring during the journey.
According to the prosecution, the elephant has been in isolation since 2020, without the company of other animals of the same species, in a limited space and under constant exposure to visitors. The situation seriously compromises its well-being.
The sanctuary in Mato Grosso, on the other hand, offers adequate infrastructure, specialized management and greater possibility of living with other elephants, as well as restricting contact with the public.
In his decision, issued last Thursday (24), Judge Alexandre de Mello Guerra pointed out that the arguments presented by the Municipal Administration of Sorocaba to keep Sandro in the city-as risks during transportation and possible exposure to infectious agents-were refuted based on technical data considered safe and consistent.
“In this sense, well found, as it was, that the place of origin does not gather the most appropriate conditions of guarantee of life decent to the animal, with, on the other hand, an alternative place able to be so, it is the duty of the Government, in this case, the municipality of Sorocaba, in the guarantee of the protection of the rights to the fauna, to make the transfer to the appropriate environment,” said the magistrate.
