Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denied on Sunday (27) ordered the spying of protesters against the government in 2023, as accused by Shin Bet’s head, Ronen Bar. In a document sent to the Supreme Court, Netanyahu classified the complaint as “an absolute lie” and reaffirmed that he never asked for action against legitimate protests. The dispute between Netanyahu and Bar takes place amid criticism of the performance of the security service on the eve of the Hamas attack to Israel on October 7, 2023.

Netanyahu held a bar responsible for not alerting authorities and security forces in time to avoid tragedy. “He did not wake up the prime minister, nor the Minister of Defense, nor the soldiers, nor the civilians near the Gaza Strip,” he said. In response, Bar said the report sent by Netanyahu is “full of inaccuracies” and “distorts reality.” Despite the pressure from the government for its dismissal, the Supreme Court suspended the removal of bar in a decision made in early April. Shin Bet’s chief indicated that he will soon announce his resignation.

Early on Sunday, on another theme, Netanyahu defended the complete dismantling of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. In a speech in Jerusalem, the prime minor said that any international agreement should prevent the country from enriching uranium and developing ballistic missiles. “Iran will not have nuclear weapons,” he said.

Netanyahu also criticized ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran, mediated by Oman, and warned that only an agreement that eliminates the Iranian nuclear capacity would be effective. Iran insists that its nuclear program has exclusively civil purposes, while Israel and Western powers suspect that the country seeks to develop nuclear weaponry. Negotiations follow after the failure of the 2015 agreement, abandoned by the United States in 2018.
