How to properly water tomatoes?
Let’s take it from the beginning. Tomato seedlings are definitely water -intensive, but like any plant they do not want to stand downright in the water. As far as watering tomatoes are concerned, I recommend in particular intense, but less frequent watering, a slow stream of water that lets the water soak up.
This means that it is necessary to pour properly at every watering of the container so that the water can get deep to the roots, but without a hurry. It is ideal to water twice a week if the seedlings are still young.
Insufficient watering, that is, where only the upper part of the soil moistens, leads to tomatoes developing its root system more up on the surface than down. This leads to a shallow -rooted plant, which is then unstable at its later height and can break away. Too fast pouring will stagger the soil. There is a crust on the surface, preventing the soil prevention and aeration.
Later during the season or during the warmer part of the year, it is necessary to water tomatoes a little more often. However, again, it is advisable to pour the containers properly, but rather every other day.
As already mentioned, tomatoes are by no means water through the leaves. This directly records the development of fungal diseases and powdery mildew. For the same reason, even the lowest leaves are removed during the summer so that the plant does not catch mold from below.
If you grow tomatoes in the greenhouse, regular ventilation is required so that the moisture does not rob on the leaves. It is ideal to water the plants in the morning so that they can dry during the day. Watering in the evening can lead to the development of fungal diseases.
Fertilizers in the dressing and the risk of cracking fruits
It is also advisable to apply fertilizers in the dressing. It is generally believed that homely fertilizers are less efficient and weaker. But this is definitely not true. You can also burn the plant with domestic fertilizers. It is necessary to dilute the cavalry from the hen and the nettle. In the case of fertilizers, it is always less.
We do not use fertilizer in the dressing every time, but at least at at least weekly intervals. Fertilizers are not used for freshly transplanted plants. Give them at least 14 days to take good root.
True troubles with watering come in the period of the greatest maturation, when the most often is really hot with occasional heavy rainfall. Large fluctuations in the supply of moisture can cause fruits to crack in tomatoes. The cracked tomatoes then rot faster and need to be processed quickly.
Both your irregular watering and the weather can be cracking. Therefore, it is necessary to apply the watering according to the current situation and so that the sudden fluctuation is not too vigorous. However, cracked tomatoes are still edible, but have a very short durability.
