The federal government decided to make prohibitions more Solid Waste Import In Brazil, allowing the entry of materials for specific industrial purposes.
.
Anderson Nassif, director of reverse logistics at National Association of Waste Pickers and Pickers (ANCAT)expressed his opposition to the decision.
“We put ourselves 100% contrary and in favor of the total revocation of the decree because it greatly harms our category,” said Nassif.
According to Nassif, the economic impact of the measure is already being felt by the sector.
“As picker cooperatives Brazil began to receive notifications of those who buy the materials about lows that would happen over time, ”he explained.
The director estimates that the drop in marketed values can reach 30% or 40%, especially for materials such as PET and cardboard, which are considered “chief cars” from collector organizations.
In addition to the economic impact, Nassif stressed the Environmental concerns related to the importation of waste.
“The environmental impact is gigantic, because it is not clear how this material will come and where it will come from,” he warned.
He recalled previous cases where imported materials as good quality were tailings, including hospital waste.
The director of Ancat argues that, instead of importing waste, Brazil should invest in public policies of selective collection with socioeconomic inclusion of the pickers.
“The country that recycles less than 4%, 5%, should invest heavily in selective public collection policies with socioeconomic inclusion of collectors,” said Nassif.
Flexibility of solid waste imports raises questions about the future of recycling in Brazil and the role of waste pickers in this process.
While the government argues that the measure aims to meet specific industrial demands, the recycling sector fears its sustainability and the environmental impact that this decision can cause.
