The liberal party won Monday’s legislative elections in Canada after a campaign marked by the threats of US President, who took the Prime Minister To ask the population on Tuesday not to forget the “betrayal” of the neighboring country. Public channel CBC and CTV News have designed that liberals will form the next Canadian government and conservative leader Pierre Poilievre acknowledged the defeat.

Trump’s trade war and his threats to attach Canada, which he repeated on election day, caused indignation among the Canadians and made the question of dealing with the United States in the country’s priority. Carry, a favorite in the research ahead of Pierre Poilievre of the conservative party, anchored his campaign in a speech against Trump.

In a speech after the victory, Carry called Trump’s actions “betrayal”. “We will win this trade war,” Carry said to thousands of voters in Ottawa, where he warned about “challenging” days due to Trump’s actions. “We have already overcome the shock of American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons,” he added.

Poilievre recognized the defeat and promised to work with the liberals to counterbalance Trump’s trade war. “We will always put Canada first,” Poilievre told Ottawa voters. “Conservatives will work with the prime minister and all parties for the common goal of defending Canada’s interests and achieving a new trade agreement that leaves the fares behind,” he said.

Several international leaders have also shown a willingness to join forces with Carry. British Prime Minister Keir Strmer said he is eager to “strengthen” relations between the two countries, “allies, partners and close friends.” The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, also said she wants to work with Ottawa to “promote multilateralism and defend free and fair trade.”

Even China, which has maintained tense relationships with Canada in recent years, has expressed the desire to “develop China-Canada relations based on mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit.” India Prime Minister Narendra Modi also celebrated the victory of Mark Meatary. He said he wished that “new opportunities” open himself between the two countries, who faced a serious diplomatic crisis in November, after Canada accused the Indian minister of the interior of pursuing Sikh opponents in Canadian territory.

The weight of Trump

Trump entered the neighboring country’s campaign with his statements about Canada’s sovereignty. “Choose the man who has strength and wisdom to cut his taxes in half and increase his military power,” he wrote on his social network. “Zero tariffs or taxes if Canada becomes the 51st state of the United States,” he added.

Carney answered. “This is Canada and we decided what happens here,” published the 60-year-old Political who has never held an elective position, but who took over as Prime Minister a month ago to replace Justin Trudeau. In Ottawa, where liberals gathered to follow the results, the first projections generated enthusiastic applause and shouts.

On January 6, when Trudeau announced his resignation, the liberals were more than 20 points behind conservatives in most research, and Poilievre seemed the likely future Premier. In the following weeks, Trump began his trade war as he repeatedly spoke of integrating Canada into the United States, and the predictions reversed themselves.

Carry, who directed the central banks of Canada and the United Kingdom, said during the campaign that his experience in the financial means made him the ideal candidate to defend Canada from Trump’s offensive tariff. In turn, 45-year-old Poilievre focused on domestic problems that made Trudeau unpopular after a decade in power, mainly due to the high cost of living. At the moment, the formation of the parliament of 343 deputies, in which the absolute majority is 172 chairs, is not yet defined. The liberals won the absolute majority in 2015, but ruled in minority from 2019.
