Initiatives in states such as SP, BA and RN show that waste can generate real economy in the pocket and decrease garbage
In a country where more than 30% of it is consumed by homes and millions of tons of garbage are discarded without any reuse, joining home economy with environmental preservation is more than necessary – it is strategic. Programs that exchange for discounts on the electricity bill show, in practice, that taking care of the environment can also relieve the budget of families. In states such as Sao Paulo, Bahia and Rio Grande do Norte, power distributors projects are collecting paper, plastic, glass and metal – as long as they are clean and separate – and transforming these waste into a monthly invoice bonuses. In São Paulo, the Ecoenel program raised more than 2,000 tons of recyclables in 2024, generating more than $ 700,000 in credits for consumers. In Bahia, the Project Vale Luz, from Neoenergia Coelba, accumulates about $ 300,000 in discounts. In Rio Grande do Norte, more than 6,000 families participate in the initiative and see the reduction of the electricity bill as a direct and constant benefit.
These actions have a concrete impact on both people’s lives and the environment. Encouraging help to take tons of garbage from landfills reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, moves the recycling chain and promotes environmental education. At the same time, it creates a positive cycle of reward, in which the consumer is valued for sustainable practices. In a pressure scenario on the cost of living, the proposal also has economic weight: the more waste they are referred correctly, the greater the discount. And the more people participate, the greater the collective effect. The challenge now is to expand. Despite the good results, there are few regions with access to this type of program. The experience already shows that, with simple structure and direct communication, it is possible to transform behavior and generate return to all: companies, citizens and planet.
