Salary update will be paid in two installments, while benefits, such as meal aid and food voucher, will be readjusted in a single installment
The councilors of the city of Last Tuesday (29) approved a bill proposed by the Mayor of the MDB, which establishes a salary adjustment of 5.2% for the Municipalities in 2025, divided into two installments. The first part, corresponding to 2.6%, will be paid in May this year, while the second, 2.55%, is scheduled for May next year. The vote, which resulted in 34 votes in favor and 17 against, occurred amid protests of civil servants.
The teachers, who have been on strike for two weeks, decided to continue the stoppage after the project approval. The Union of Municipal Public Servants (Sindsep) criticized the measure, stating that salary replacement of 2.6% is insufficient, representing only half of inflation, which is 5.2%. The government, in turn, justifies the installment of the readjustment as a way to guarantee the fiscal balance, providing for an increase of R $ 1.2 billion in the payroll.
During the voting session, the new councilwoman Cris Monteiro made a statement that was considered racist, generating a climate of tension and interruptions. The mayor, Ricardo Teixeira, from União Brasil, argued that there was no racism in the words of the councilwoman. The situation worsened with aggressions between the councilors and offenses directed to the teachers on strike, who were called vagabonds.
“When you [vereadores de oposição] spoke, no one [nas galerias] manifested itself. Now, when a white woman comes here tell you the truth, you are all nervous. Why? Because a white, beautiful and rich woman bothers you a lot, but I’m here representing an important part of the population that elected me, ”said Cris Monteiro.
Outside the House, the situation was also troubled, with police using pepper gas against protesters protesting. The approval of the project and the developments of the session reveal a scenario of polarization and discontent between public servants and the municipal administration, reflecting dissatisfaction with working conditions and salary appreciation.
